Swordsmith : Yamato no kami Yoshimichi (signed)

*“Yamato no Kami Yoshimichi” was the second son of the first-generation “Osaka Tanba no Kami Yoshimichi,” and a distinguished swordsmith counted among the “Three Great Masters of Chōji-midare” in the Kansai region. Although his exact year of birth is unknown, he lived until the Enpō era (1673–1681) and died at over eighty years of age. He is also commonly referred to as “Himeji Yamato,” as he once resided and worked in Himeji, Harima Province (present-day Himeji City, Hyōgo Prefecture).

The chōji-midare style for which Yamato no Kami Yoshimichi was renowned refers to a hamon pattern resembling a շարք of clove-shaped elements. In later generations, through a technique known as “kusuri-yakiba,” more elaborate and decorative designs incorporating motifs such as chrysanthemum-on-water, Mount Fuji, and cherry blossoms were produced, gaining great popularity. His blades are also noted for their sharpness and were rated as “Yoki Wazamono” (excellent cutting ability) in the Edo-period sword appraisal text Kaihō Kenjaku.
