This is a handsome and common sparrow of the desert southwest. Despite its vivid markings, it is often difficult to detect among the rocks and scrub flitting about low to the ground and hiding deep within cover. It is a bird adapted to an arid environment and can go long periods without water. These little guys nested in my front yard and I watched them lose their first eggs to a predator and they tried again, losing 3 hatched babies to another predator. The carving remembers their efforts at bringing forth a new generation.
