Narrative: The Western Tanager is a common summer bird found in open coniferous forests. The birds court, mate, and nest in the west but spend the cold winters in Mexico. The male plumage is strikingly beautiful and more so when he is ready to mate, when his head gains a lot of red color, and he begins to show off with a potential mate. The female colors can range from a light grey to greenish plumage that isn’t very exciting when next to a colorful male. In the late spring to early summer, the birds feed on insects, often like a flycatcher, but transition to berries and small fruits in late summer.
