This crow-sized hawk is a predator of other birds and when it is in pursuit of prey low to the ground its flight is swift and dashing and its long tail makes it highly maneuverable. After 3 years of reaching maturity males are smaller than females and get noticeable red eyes. When challenged the bird's “mantle” spreading their wings and fluffing their feathers increasing their size and ferocious look. They are common predators around backyard bird feeders!
