To be a successful bird carver you must be able to understand feathers, what feather grouping on the body they belong to, where they exist on the bird and be able to carve a single feather instead of an entire bird. And then you have a wonderful opportunity to ruin your work with a horrible paint job! Of course, the carver is referring to a real feather in all aspects that is hopefully correctly re-created in wood!
